KALAPANA
Body found near cabin difficult to identify

Big Island police are trying to identify a set of badly decomposed human remains found Monday morning in the lower Puna subdivision of Kalapana Seaview Estates.

Police said a man called at about 9:14 a.m. to report finding the remains on a parcel near his property. The body was near a rustic cabin surrounded by waist-high vegetation, police said.

The remains appears to be that of an elderly male, but the advanced stage of decomposition made it impossible to immediately identify the man. An autopsy yesterday found no sign of foul play, but did not determine the exact cause of death, police said.

Police ask that anyone with information on this case call Det. Reed Mahuna at 961-2384 or the police non-emergency line at 935-3311.

Tipsters who prefer to remain anonymous can call Crime Stoppers at 961-8300 in Hilo or 329-8181 in Kona. All calls to Crime Stoppers are kept confidential.
