Advertiser Staff

Sophomore Corie Hou pulled into first alone and brought the University of Hawai'i with her yesterday as the Rainbow Wahine held onto first place going into today's final round of the 18th annual Western Athletic Conference Women's Golf Championship in Fresno, Calif.

The 'Bows opened with 301 Monday at Sunnyside Golf Course and followed with a 302 yesterday. They lead Fresno State (301-610) by seven shots, New Mexico State by 11 and 38th-ranked San Jose State by 13. Defending champion Idaho (308-620) is in fifth.

All five Rainbows are in the top 20 individually. Hou, whose fourth-place finish last year helped Hawai'i to a best-ever third-place WAC finish, shot 1-over 73 yesterday and is at 145 for the tournament. She leads NMSU's Suteera Chanachai (75) and FSU's Laura Luethke (74) by two. Baldwin graduate Kelly Nakashima (76-151) shares fifth.

Hawai'i senior Xyra Suyetsugu (79-154) is in 10th, followed by teammates Phyllis Lai (77-155), and Carolina Perez (73) and Lisa Kajihara (81) at 157.

The Rainbow Wahine, 73rd in this week's GolfWeek/Sagarin Performance Index, need to win the WAC today to advance to their second NCAA Championship. They made their first NCAA Regional last year.

Moanalua graduate Iris Ocariza (77) of Boise State is tied for 22nd and Kaua'i's Jennie Pleas (78), a Nevada senior, is tied for 24th.
