WASHINGTON — U.S. Sen. Daniel K. Inouye has announced that federal grants totaling nearly $4.5 million have been awarded to two neighbor island airports for airport improvements.

Lanai Airport will receive $2,465,550 for the second phase of the expansion of the general aviation apron. Approximately 143,280 square feet of aircraft parking apron will be built.

"This project reflects the increasing general aviation aircraft needs at the Lanai Airport," Inouye said.

Molokai Airport will receive $2 million for safety improvements to area of Runway 23. An open drainage culvert will be replaced with a new closed culvert, and the area around it will be regraded to meet safety requirements.

"These projects will improve our airport infrastructure, and help ensure the safety of local residents and visitors," Inouye said.

He is chairman of both the Senate Commerce, Science, and Transportation Committee, and the Senate Defense Appropriations Subcommittee.
