Highway resurfacing under way in Makaha

Advertiser Staff

The state has started a three-month, $2 million resurfacing project in Makaha, between Orange Street and Kili Drive on Farrington Highway.

Motorists and residents are being advised that the westbound lane of Farrington along the roughly one-mile stretch will be closed through Friday, with minor inconveniences continuing for the next three months.

"We've been spending the earlier part of April rebuilding the concrete bus pads," said Scott Ishikawa, spokesman for the state Department of Transportation.

"Now that that's done, we're going to begin digging up the old pavement. That should last through the end of the month. When that's finished we're going to put down a new layer of asphalt."

Ishikawa said the actual repaving will begin the second week in May, and will continue for about a month. He said re-striping the roadway and completing loose ends will last another two months.

Motorists are asked to use caution while driving through the work area, and to allow for extra travel time.

Ishikawa said one lane will be open while work is being done. He said the repaving would be done mostly during weekdays, when vehicle travel is light along that portion of the highway.
