Mililani topples Kapolei in softball

By Kyle Sakamoto
Advertiser Staff Writer

It's not about records, standings or seeding for the Mililani softball team as it nears the end of the regular season.

It's about staying sharp and tuning up for the league playoffs.

Courtney Senas batted 2 for 4 with two runs scored and three RBIs, and Mililani scored five runs in the sixth in a 9-3 victory over Kapolei last night in an O'ahu Interscholastic Association Red West game at Central O'ahu Regional Park

Mililani, ranked No. 1 in The Advertiser Top 10 poll, improved to 10-1. The Trojans had wrapped up the league title prior to last night. Kapolei dropped to 7-4.

Both teams have one game remaining with the OIA playoffs starting Wednesday.

"We don't want to go into the playoffs on a down note," said Mililani coach Rose Antonio. "You want to be up and keep working on the little things. You need to come out with the 'W.' "

Mililani ace Makani Duhaylonsod scattered nine hits and allowed all three runs in the fifth when Kapolei drew within 4-3.

The Hurricanes had four hits in the inning, and also benefitted from a walk and two passed balls. They could have added another run, but Mililani center fielder Jaimee Aiwohi threw out a runner trying to score from second base on a bases-loaded single by Dorian Acierto.

"They were patient. That one time, they were patient," said Kapolei coach Tony Saffery. "We were able to put the runs on the board. I thought we could get that one more run in there, so I pushed her home. But she got out at home. After that, we just couldn't string them back together again."

In the sixth, Mililani's Kristi Oshiro had a two-run single, Senas had a run-scoring fielder's choice and two more runners came home on a fielding error by the second baseman — one of five committed by Kapolei.

"Our team never gives up," Senas said. "I give them props. We keep our head up and always battle. That's what's good about us. We go out there and just try our best, and if it's good enough to win then, yeah."
