UH water polo team advances with win

The fifth-seeded University of Hawai'i women's water polo team opened the 2008 Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Championship yesterday with a 15-11 victory over No. 12 UC Santa Barbara at the Aztec Aquaplex in San Diego, Calif. The Rainbow Wahine improved to 19-8 overall, while the Gauchos fell to 5-19.

The Rainbow Wahine advance to the second round of the MPSF Championship against fourth-seeded San Diego State at 12:50 p.m. today, Hawai'i time at the Aztec Aquaplex. In their last meeting on April 8, SDSU beat Hawai'i, 10-7.

Yesterday, the Rainbow Wahine were led by junior Angela Turnbull, who scored a match-high five goals. Junior Kelly Mason followed with four goals.

Hawai'i's Saara Majuri scored the first goal of the match and Turnbull scored on a six-on-five advantage to give UH a two-point lead. But a goal by UCSB narrowed the score to 3-2.

Despite scoring six goals in the second period, twice on six-on-five advantages, Hawai'i trailed halfway through the period until Turnbull scored her third goal of the match at 3:32. UCSB also scored six goals and held UH to a 9-8 advantage at the half.

Hawai'i dominated the second half, scoring five unanswered goals. Freshman goalie Serena Bredin also held the Gauchos to three goals. UH had a five-point lead until UCSB scored two consecutive goals with three minutes left in the fourth. Mason scored the final goal of the match with 32 seconds left.


TENNIS

UH WOMEN OUSTED IN WAC QUARTERFINALS

New Mexico State ousted the University of Hawai'i women's tennis team, 4-1, yesterday in the quarterfinals of the 2008 Western Athletic Conference Championship at Las Cruces, N.M.

Fourth-seeded New Mexico State (12-9) earned the doubles point by winning the No. 2 and No. 3 doubles matches against fifth-seeded Hawai'i (6-17). However, the duo of sophomore Sophie Kobuch and senior Chloe Bihag won No. 1 doubles over Sophia Marks and Aleksa Costa, 8-3.

The Aggies won three singles matches to clinch the victory. Stephanie Eusebe dropped senior Julia Sandborn, 6-0, 6-1 at the No. 3 court and Paulina Zuniga rolled past sophomore Marie Tanaka, 6-3, 6-1, at No. 6. New Mexico State's Anne Fagegaltier clinched the match after defeating Bihag, 6-3, 7-5.

Freshman Natasha Zorec had UH's lone singles victory, beating Zeljka Juricek, 6-1, 6-2.


BASEBALL

HPU WINS ON ROAD; MEAD MOVES TO 7-0

Senior lefthander Kaimi Mead allowed one run in seven innings to lead Hawai'i Pacific over Grand Canyon, 9-3, yesterday in nonconference baseball at Phoenix, Ariz.

Mead (7-0) scattered four hits, walked five and struck out two batters. Nick Alexander pitched a scoreless eighth and Aaron Kent pitched the ninth against Grand Canyon (10-33).

Danny Lee batted 3 for 5 with three RBIs, and Johnny Gentry went 3 for 4 with a solo home run for HPU (27-15-1).
