It took the Kailua baseball team a while to come alive and leave no doubt yesterday against Campbell.

Kale Sumner and Keenan Tanaka both doubled twice and drove in two runs, and host Kailua scored six insurance runs in the sixth inning to beat Campbell, 10-3, yesterday in the quarterfinals of the O'ahu Interscholastic Association tournament.

"It took us a while to get started and we finally stayed patient and had good pitches to hit," said Kailua coach Corey Ishigo.

Kailua, ranked No. 4 in The Advertiser's Top 10 poll, qualified for the state tournament with the victory. Pearl City, Castle, and 'Aiea also qualified with victories yesterday.

The Surfriders will host 'Aiea in the semifinals today at 3:30 p.m.

Kailua, the East champion, sent 11 batters to the plate in the sixth with the first five reaching safely. There were six hits, two walks and an error in the inning.

"Anytime you play a team like Kailua, the bats are going to stay silent only for a while," said Campbell coach Rory Pico. "It was a matter of time before they got their good swings."

The first run of the inning scored on a fielding error by the left fielder. Jared Iha had a run-scoring single, Sumner had a two-run double, and Tanaka and Jordan Limahai each added RBI doubles.

"We were battling out there," said Sumner, who also scored three runs. "No one in the state pitching-wise is going to stop us right now. We're feeling really confident and ready to explode."

Kailua reliever Bryson Gauthe picked up the victory with 1 2/3 scoreless innings, and Alika Ramseyer-Ho retired all four batters he faced for the save.

"Bryson came in and threw strikes, and Alika also did the same thing, and we played good 'D' behind them," Ishigo said.

Kailua, which trailed 3-1 after 2 1/2 innings, took a 4-3 lead by stealing a run in the fifth.

It had runners at the corners with one out, and Campbell left-hander Allyn Oliva-Respicio threw a pick-off throw to first. Rob DeMarsh was caught off the bag and tagged out by the first baseman, but Tanaka was able to score from third.

Reyn Matsuki started for Kailua (10-2) and allowed three runs — two earned — over four-plus innings. The Surfriders committed five errors, including four over the first four innings.

"That's how we play baseball," Ishigo said. "We make a lot of errors. We're trying to cut that down, but we were fortunate enough today to get away with a win."

Campbell, the West's No. 4 team, got an opposite-field, two-run homer to right by Bronson Ellis in the first, and Kia Kapana scored on a wild pitch in the third.

Kailua drew even in the bottom of the third on Scotty Talaesea's RBI single and Tanaka's run-scoring double.

"He's starting to turn it on and he also got good pitches to hit as well," Ishigo said of Tanaka.

Campbell (8-5) was 0 for 10 with a walk with runners in scoring position. The Sabers stranded nine runners, including six in scoring position.

Campbell can still qualify for the state tournament but must win consecutive games to claim the OIA's fifth and final berth. The Sabers will play at Kaiser today.

"We made some poor pitches," Pico said. "They had a bunch of two-strike hits. It's just about location. Hopefully, we can re-focus and get the job done next time."
