Big Isle bridge near Ninole to close for repairs

Waikaumalo Stream Bridge in Ninole/Hamakua area of the Big Island will be closed for repair work for one week beginning Monday, May 5, according to the Hawaii County Department of Public Works.

The bridge is located on an unnamed road that branches off from Piha-

Kahuku Homestead Road approximately two miles mauka of the Hawai`i Belt

Road near Ninole.

Repair work is scheduled between 7 a.m. and 5:30 p.m., and the bridge will

be closed to vehicles during these hours, except for emergencies. Every effort

will be made to have the bridge passable in the evenings and at night when

repair work is not in progress. The project is expected to be completed in five

working days, weather permitting.

The County of Hawai`i maintains 127 bridges, which are registered under the

National Bridge Inventory, administered by the Federal Highway Administration.

Waikaumalo is one of 28 wooden bridges that serve the communities in Puna,

Hilo, Kohala, Kona, Hamakua and Ka'u.
