Preps: No. 9 Waiakea, Kohala win BIIF softball titles

Pitcher Kirsty Imai scattered eight hits and Kiah Taroma had two hits as the Waiakea High School softball team defeated Hilo, 6-3, yesterday for the Big Island Interscholastic Federation Division I tournament title.

With the win, the host Warriors (11-0), ranked ninth in the Advertiser's statewide poll of coaches and media, receive the league's lone berth to the state tournament. The Vikings (8-3) will later play the O'ahu Interscholastic Association's sixth-place finisher for a berth to states.

The OIA tournament begins this week.

At Kamehameha Park in Kapa'au, Kohala defeated Pahoa,10-1, for the BIIF Division II championship.

It is believed to be the Cowgirls' (9-2) first-ever BIIF softball title.

Tiana Westbrook hit a three-run homer for Kohala and Lavinia Holschuh scattered four hits while striking out six.

In the third-place game, host Konawaena defeated Honoka'a, 3-0. Kayla Kurashige threw a one-hitter for the Wildcats (6-5), striking out 14 and walking five.

Kohala, Pahoa and Konawaena received the league's three state tournament berths.
