WAHIAWA — Moanalua's Derron Maki captured his fourth title and three other Na Menehune won their divisions at the O'ahu Interscholastic Association Individual Judo Championships yesterday at Leilehua High School.

Maki ended the 132-pound final with an ippon of Pearl City's Jason Wong.

"It's an accomplishment, but (yesterday) was more of a team effort to put players in seven of the finals," Maki said. "I was more proud of that than my four individual titles."

Pearl City's Christian Pavo also earned his fourth league crown with an ippon of Moanalua's Julian Garay in the 161-pound final.

"Every match I played I was so nervous," Pavo said. "I felt lots of pressure (to win four), but after I threw him I was real happy. After my quarterfinal match I was kind of doubting myself because I didn't think I could last all five minutes."

Na Menehune sophomore Brady LaFortune won at 114 pounds after capturing the 108 title last year, defeating teammate Aaron Taniguchi in the final.

Moanalua's Justin Osumi (145 pounds) beat McKinley's Damon Hom Jr. to win his second consecutive OIA title while avenging a semifinal loss at last week's OIA Eastern Division Championships. Mililani senior Matthew Ogata topped Moanalua's Branen Yamamoto for his second straight championship at 178 pounds and Pearl City senior Tyler Lauifi won the 275-pound division over Farrington's Keith Tuilepa for his third consecutive OIA crown.

Farrington junior Taylor Ibera (98 pounds) won her third OIA title by defeating Pearl City's Hazel Asperin and Governor teammate Tani Ader captured her fourth, disposing of Kahuku's Ciannah Hee in the 129-pound final.

"I feel happy about getting all the titles, but states are what's most important," Ader said. "But it still feels good after last year's loss in states."

In yesterday's 122-pound final, Kalani sophomore Megan Yamaguchi edged Kahuku senior Danica Auna in a grueling 10-minute overtime match.

"They call her my 'Kryptonite,' because I've seen her so many times before," Yamaguchi said. A five-minute overtime period followed a scoreless regulation, but neither player scored. Yamaguchi eventually won by unanimous decision.

Elsewhere yesterday, Punahou won its fifth straight Interscholastic League of Honolulu boys championship and the Buffanblu girls won their first title.
