WAILUKU, Maui — Maui police issued 65 citations during a four-hour speeding enforcement push on major highways over the weekend.

Among those ticketed were drivers going too fast and one who was going too slow.

The enforcement effort took place from 8 p.m. Saturday to midnight on Pi'ilani Highway in Kihei, Honapi'ilani Highway in Ma'alaea, Kuihelani Highway in Kahului, Mokulele Highway in Pu'unene, Kahului Beach Road and Haleakala Highway.

For public safety reasons, police had to back off pursuit of a vehicle that was clocked at 101 mph, but many other speeders did not escape.

Three citations were issued for excessive speeding, which is defined as a motorist exceeding the posted speed limit by 30 mph or more, or going faster than 80 mph.

One motorist traveling at 40 mph in the left lane of a two-lane highway in a 55 mph zone was cited for impeding traffic.

One person was arrested for driving without a license, and four for drunken driving.

Other violations included driving with an open liquor container in the vehicle, driving with a revoked license, and having no auto insurance.

Police said five of the county's eight traffic fatalities this year involved speeding, reckless driving, impaired driving or a combination of the three.
