Here is the text of a statement released today by Gov. Linda Lingle on the shutdown of Aloha Airlines' cargo division:
"I am very disappointed that an agreement did not materialize that would have allowed the continuation of Aloha Airlines Cargo operations.
"Since Aloha first announced it was filing for bankruptcy, the State has been in discussions with cargo operators to identify other alternatives for the transportation of goods between the islands. Many of the shippers that use Aloha cargo service have made contingency plans with other air or sea carriers.
"We are also concerned, of course, for the nearly 300 employees and their families. As we did immediately when Aloha terminated its passenger service, the State has activated our multi-agency Rapid Response Team to assist the affected employees.
"The Rapid Response Team, led by the Department of Labor and Industrial Relations, will survey workers to evaluate their job skills and determine what type of job placement assistance might be needed. The team will also discuss available benefits and programs, including unemployment insurance, health insurance coverage, job placement services and training opportunities.
"I have also been in contact this afternoon with Mayors Kim, Tavares and Baptiste to discuss collaborative efforts between state and local government, as well as the private sector, to ensure continued interisland cargo transportation service."
