Maui police cite 65 speeders in 4 hours

Advertiser Staff

Maui police issued 65 speeding citations over a four-hour period Saturday, including three for "excessive speeding" in which motorists were exceeding the posted limit by 30 miles per hour or exceeding 80 miles per hour.

However, not everyone cited was speeding.

One motorist, driving in the left lane of a 55 mph zone at 40 mph, was cited for impeding traffic.

The anti-speeding operation took place from 8 p.m. to midnight with police officers posted on all major highways: Pi'ilani Highway in Kihei, Honoapi'ilani Highway in Ma'alaea, and Kuihelani, Mokulele and Haleakala highways as well as Kahului Beach Road.

Police plan to do speeding campaigns periodically.
