Proving they are alumni of a quick-strike offense, four former University of Hawai'i football players wasted little time in securing free-agent deals with National Football League teams.

  • Slotback Davone Bess, who had 293 receptions and 41 touchdowns in his 39-game UH career, agreed to terms on a two-year contract with the Miami Dolphins.

  • Wideout Jason Rivers, who finished his career with back-to-back 1,000-yard seasons, has agreed to sign with the Tennessee Titans.

  • Slotback Ryan Grice-Mullins, who had a team-high 1,372 receiving yards last season, will sign a two-year contract with the Houston Texans.

  • Offensive guard Hercules Satele, who bench pressed 225 pounds 40 times at last month's Pro Day, has reached a deal with the Arizona Cardinals.

Bess and Grice-Mullins were three-year starters who opted not to return to UH for their senior year.

"I'm good," said Bess, who said financial considerations did not factor in his decision to apply for the draft. "No regrets at all. One year wouldn't have made a difference."

Grice-Mullins also insisted he had "no regrets. I made the right decision. You never know with the draft. It's all over, and now I'm ready to go on the field and do what I do."

The three receivers were projected to be selected in the draft. Those three, along with quarterback Colt Brennan and wideout C.J. Hawthorne, formed the Western Athletic Conference's Unit of the Year.

But their names were not called during ESPN's telecasts of the two-day, seven-round draft.

In the fifth round, the Dolphins called Bess, saying they would offer him a free-agent deal if he went undrafted. Minutes after the draft ended, Bess' agent was finalizing a pact.

Receiving an opportunity to compete in an NFL camp, Bess said, "that's the main thing. I've jumped over 100 hurdles my whole life. What's one more? This is the profession I chose to go into. It's a business. I have to put the hard work in."

Bess said he will have a chance to compete at inside receiver and punt returner.

Grice-Mullins said he does not mind going the free-agent route.

"When we all came to Hawai'i, nobody knew us," he said. "We had to prove ourselves, and make a name for ourselves. We don't stop now. We can't shy away from competing. We know nothing is handed to you — from high school to college to this. It's just another thing."

Rivers overcame academic problems and a broken ankle that kept him off the field during the 2005 season. He played most of last season despite back spasms — a condition that required him to undergo an NFL-mandated MRI during the NFL Scouting Combine in February.

"Everything in my life has been hard," Rivers said. "I've had to work for it. This is no different. It's kind of silly to think it would be given to me, handed on a silver platter.

"Even if I were drafted," he added, "I'd still have to work for it. This is kind of humbling, and it puts things into perspective."

Rivers said the Titans are "the best fit for me."

Despite his impressive display of strength at the Pro Day, Satele was cautious entering the draft.

"I wasn't expecting anything," he said. "What happens, happens."

He said he is "excited to play at the next level."

Arizona's starting quarterback is Matt Leinart, Brennan's former high school teammate.

"Hopefully, I get the chance to play with another Mater Dei guy," Satele said.

The four leave Thursday for their respective mini camps. Each will receive a signing bonus of up to $10,000.

Meanwhile, right guard Larry Sauafea said he has received inquiries from three teams. He said he expects to receive an offer today.

Hawthorne has been in talks with Minnesota and Philadelphia. An offer should come today.

Defensive tackle Michael Lafaele and defensive end Amani Purcell still were awaiting word on free-agent offers.
