South shores under high surf advisory

Advertiser Staff

A large storm east of New Zealand has produced a south swell in the Hawaiian Islands that will continue to build today before peaking Wednesday, the National Weather Service said.

As a result, a high surf advisory has been issued for all south shores until 6 p.m. Thursday.

Surf along south shores will be 6 to 10 feet today, while surf along west shores will be 5 to 8 feet. East shores will see surf 3 to 5 feet and north shores will have surf 1 to 3 feet.

A new small north swell is expected to arrive tonight, peak on Wednesday, then slowly lower into Thursday. East facing shores will see short period trade wind produced surf through the week.

One word of caution to surfers: The peak of this month's box jellyfish influx is expected to be today along south and west shores. If you're allergic to jellyfish stings, stay out of the water.
