Waikiki bar-fight beating subject of trial

Advertiser Staff

A nightclub scuffle that spilled onto the streets of Waikiki is at the center of an attempted murder trial that began today in Circuit Court.

Ryan Matthew Carrillo threw a "superman punch" that caused catastrophic brain injuries to Jesse Greenwood and left the victim permanently and severely disabled, Deputy Prosecutor Christopher Van Marter said in his opening statement in the nonjury trial.

The incident occurred in the early morning hours of Feb. 12, 2007, in the 300 block of Lewers Street.

Both men were visitors from California and had been involved in a minor scuffle with each other shortly before inside the nightspot.

Attorney Michael Green, representing Carrillo, 25, described Greenwood as "a mean drunk" whose level of intoxication that night affected both his behavior and the severity of his injuries.
