Big Island power outage under investigation

Advertiser Staff

The Hawaii Electric Light Co. has announced that at 8:40 p.m. Tuesday, approximately 1,200 customers in the South Kona area of the Big Island, from Kealakekua to Captain Cook, lost their electrical service when an overhead conductor broke free from its support on a pole along Mamalahoa Highway.

The guy wire bracing the pole was also found broken, the company said.

Power was restored to about 400 of the customers by 9:27 p.m. while service to the remaining 800 customers was brought back at 11:20 p.m. after repairs were completed.

The cause of the equipment damage is under investigation.
