The Fifth annual Surf 4 Hugs event will be held from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at Waikiki Beach.

A large group of volunteers will take children who have been diagnosed with a life-threatening disease out for a day of fun at the beach.

Beach Boys at Kuhio Beach will help teach the kids to surf and give the families canoe rides while photographers will provide each child with a commemorative photo of the day.

The event includes not only the children who are ill, but their siblings and parents as well, since when one person in a family is challenged by illness, the whole family suffers as well, organizers said.
