Weather: Heavy showers possible later today

A high pressure area to the north of the islands will keep trade winds blowing but they will probably be on the light side through the weekend, the National Weather Service said.

The atmosphere will be a bit unstable so locally heavy showers are possible, especially in the afternoons, forecasters said.

The trades are expected to build again and become quite breezy by the middle of the new week.

Later in the week, a disturbance passing south of the state main help maintain the breezy trades.

Here's a closer look at the weekend weather:

Today: Scattered showers after noon. The rain could be heavy at times. Partly cloudy, with a high near 87. East wind around 9 mph. Chance of precipitation is 30%.

Tonight: Isolated showers. Partly cloudy, with a low around 72. East wind around 7 mph. Chance of precipitation is 20%.

Sunday: Isolated showers. Partly cloudy, with a high near 88. East wind between 7 and 15 mph, with gusts as high as 18 mph. Chance of precipitation is 20%.

Sunday Night: Scattered showers. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 73. East wind around 11 mph. Chance of precipitation is 40%.

Monday: Scattered showers. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 88. East wind between 11 and 15 mph, with gusts as high as 18 mph. Chance of precipitation is 50%.

Monday Night: Scattered showers. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 74. East wind around 11 mph. Chance of precipitation is 30%.
