Man, 26, killed in Makiki crash identified

A 26-year-old Honolulu man was killed early this morning after losing control of his speeding car, which flipped over in the west-bound lanes of H-1 Freeway near the Alexander Street on-ramp in Makiki.

The city Office of the Medical Examiner today identified him as Stephen Yeh.

Police vehicular homicide investigators said Yeh lost control of a 2007 Toyota Camry sedan after he swerved to the right to avoid a slower vehicle in the left lane.

The Camry skidded right across all three freeway lanes, struck a "jersey barrier" on the right edge of the freeway and then swerved back across the freeway, slamming into the center concrete barrier at 1:12 a.m., police said.

The Camry flipped over onto its roof, ejecting Yeh, who was not wearing a seatbelt, police investigators said.

The Camry continued to slide on its roof and collided into the back of a 2003 Mazda B3, dislodging the Mazda's spoiler, sending it through the rear window of the Mazda. The spoiler hit a 23-year-old woman, who was riding in the right rear seat of the Mazda, in the head. She was later taken to Straub Clinic & Hospital in good condition.

The Mazda driver, a 24-year-old Honolulu man, and a front-seat passenger, a 23-year-old man from Honolulu, were wearing seatbelts and were not injured in the crash, police said. It was not known if the back-seat passenger was wearing a seatbelt.

The front passenger in the Camry, a 26-year-old man from 'Ewa Beach, was wearing a seatbelt and was taken to the hospital in serious condition.

Police said speeding on the part of the Camry driver was a factor in the collision but do not know if alcohol or drugs played a part in the crash.

Speed, alcohol and drugs were not factors in the Mazda driver's involvement in the crash, police said.

The traffic fatality this morning is the 30th of the year compared to 41 during the same period last year.
