Boyd Gaming quarterly profit slips 5%

Boyd Gaming Corp., the gaming company whose Las Vegas downtown casinos and vacation packages are popular with Hawai'i residents, said second-quarter profit fell as people pulled back on vacations, gambling and entertainment spending.

The company reported that net income from continuing operations fell to $21.7 million, or 25 cents a share, from $22.9 million, or 26 cents a share, a year earlier. Revenue tumbled 9.9 percent to $460.8 million.

Boyd and other casino operators have been suffering because of a decline in Las Vegas gaming revenue. In the downtown Las Vegas segment, revenue fell to $63 million from $65 million a year earlier.

Boyd, which also owns Las Vegas tour packager Vacations Hawaii, said it faced higher fuel costs that affected leisure travel from the 50th state.

Boyd also announced yesterday that it is suspending work on its 5,000-room Echelon resort development in Las Vegas because of economic conditions and challenging credit markets.

"Consumers across the nation are faced with rising food and fuel costs, and the housing slump continues to impact consumer confidence," said Boyd chief executive Keith Smith in a news statement.
