Quarterback Tyler Graunke will be withheld from participating in the University of Hawai'i football team's training camp until he resolves a personal issue.

Graunke said he hopes the situation will be resolved soon, allowing him to participate in Monday's first practice of training camp.

Freshmen and junior-college players report to training camp today; veterans report tomorrow.

"I'm working on this," said Graunke, adding he did not want to comment further until the situation is clarified.

Head coach Greg McMackin said Graunke has "things to work on."

McMackin emphasized that Graunke is not suspended, and that he will be allowed to rejoin the team when his situation is resolved. Citing privacy laws, McMackin declined to give specific details about Graunke's situation.

Graunke was the primary backup to Colt Brennan the past three seasons. Graunke started two games last season. He was the only Warrior to throw a touchdown pass in the Sugar Bowl.

Graunke, who was expected to be Brennan's successor, violated an undisclosed team policy earlier this year and was suspended for a month. He was reinstated in time for spring training.

Graunke, a fifth-year senior, and Inoke Funaki, a fourth-year junior, exited spring training as co-No. 1 quarterbacks.

McMackin had said he was going to open the competition to junior-college transfers Greg Alexander and Brent Rausch. The plan calls for a depth chart to be established in the second week of training camp.

Yesterday, McMackin reaffirmed that the quarterback's competition would be open. McMackin said Funaki, Alexander and Rausch would receive an equal amount of snaps in the first week of training camp.

"I can't afford to miss time," Graunke said.

Shane Austin, a second-year freshman, and fifth-year senior Jake Santos also are on the training-camp roster. But they are expected to work mostly with the scout-team offense this week.

Including Graunke, there are 104 players — one below the NCAA limit — on the training-camp roster.

There are 19 newcomers expected to report today.

Offensive tackle Kainoa LaCount is attending summer classes through Thursday at College of the Canyons. He will not report until next weekend.

Twelve of the newcomers, including Alexander and Rausch, arrived in May and have worked out in Manoa all summer.

First-year Warriors who participated in spring training, such as running back Jake Heun and cornerback Jameel Dowling, do not have to report until tomorrow.

The most intriguing newcomer is running back Joey Cadiz, a 2007 Mililani High School graduate. Cadiz attended Humboldt State last year.

As a slotback/running back at Mililani, Cadiz did not score a touchdown for the junior varsity or varsity teams. But he earned a spot on UH's training-camp roster because of his work in the offseason conditioning program.
