Memorial service set for former med school dean

Advertiser Staff

A memorial service for the former Dean of the John A. Burns School of Medicine will be held Saturday at 3 p.m. at Kawaiaha'o Church in Honolulu.

A reception will follow on the church grounds.

Terence A. Rogers, who died July 16 at Kuakini Medical Center at the age of 83, willed his body to the medical school to help future medical doctors learn their profession.

Rogers came to Hawai'i in 1964 and was instrumental in developing the University of Hawai'i at Manoa's Pacific Biomedical Research Center. In 1967, Rogers helped form the medical school, which opened to its first class, offering two years of medical instruction.

In 1973, under Rogers' leadership, (he became Dean of the medical school in 1972), the John A. Burns School of Medicine became a full, four-year institution granting medical degrees.

Rogers is survived by his life companion, Tomi Satake Haehnlen, of Honolulu, and his children, Keith, Clare and Valerie of Canada, Patrick of France, and two grandchildren.

Gifts in Dr. Rogers' memory may be made payable to the University of Hawai'i Foundation, Terence A. Rogers, PhD Memorial Fund, to benefit the students at the John A. Burns School of Medicine.
