A fire that was first reported at 9:39 a.m. yesterday at the Paukukalo Hawaiian Homes park in Wailuku on Maui was extinguished by firefighters at 1:15 a.m.

Two engines and one water tanker were joined by the Fire Department's Hazmat engine and a fire rescue crew to put out the fire that burned playground equipment in the park.

No injuries were reported. The cause of the fire is undetermined.

A preliminary estimate of $10,000 was provided by fire officials. According to Fire Battalion Chief Frank Tam, the black smoke that could be seen for miles was due to the petroleum-based material the plastic equipment was made of.

The playground equipment is part of a County of Maui park located in the Paukukalo Hawaiian Homes subdivision in Wailuku.

The County of Maui Parks and Recreation Department had recently made improvements to the playground including the resurfacing of the playground area.

"This is so unfortunate for the kids who play there," said Parks Director Tamara Horcajo. "I encourage the public to help us keep a watchful eye on our park facilities. If anyone sees anything suspicious, please call the police."
