Pearl City seniors suffer first loss

Southern California scored five runs in the top of the 11th inning to defeat Pearl City, 10-5, yesterday at the Little League Seniors (ages 14-16) Western Regional in Upland, Calif.

The outcome left both teams with one loss and forced a winner-take-all final today at 3 p.m. Hawai'i time for the regional title and a berth in the World Series, Aug. 10 to 16 in Bangor, Maine.

Brandon Solis had three hits and Manuel Perez three RBIs for Southern California (4-1).

Kahana Neal had three hits, and Reid Ramos and Christian Perkins each had two hits for Pearl City (3-1), which would have clinched the regional title with a victory.

WAIPI'O STILL UNBEATEN

Caleb Duhay pitched a three-hitter and Waipi'o scored four runs in the bottom of the fourth inning to beat Glendale, Ariz., 5-1, yesterday in the Little League Majors (ages 11-12) Western Regional at San Bernardino, Calif.

Duhay struck out eight and walked one for Waipi'o (2-0), which plays Cedar City, Utah today at 1:30 p.m. Hawai'i time.

Keelan Obedoza doubled for Waipi'o, which was held to three hits but scored its four runs in the fourth with the help of four Glendale errors.

MILILANI GOES TO 2-0

Tyler Tokunaga pitched a four-hitter and Jake Baptista had three hits and three RBIs as Mililani defeated Riverside Victoria (Calif.), 8-3, yesterday in the P.O.N.Y. Pony (ages 13-15) West Zone Tournament at Fullerton, Calif.

Larry Paas added two hits and two RBIs for Mililani (2-0), which plays either Riverside Victoria or Sacramento today at 1 p.m. Hawai'i time.

MILILANI FALLS IN FINAL

Fountain Valley, Calif. defeated Mililani, 8-1, yesterday in the championship game of the PONY Bronco (ages 11-12) West Zone Tournament at Valencia, Calif.

Trent Sitar and Rayson Romero each had a hit for Mililani. Details were not available.


TENNIS

CANCER BENEFIT AUG. 16

An adult tournament to benefit the Hawai'i Children's Cancer Foundation will be held Aug. 16 at the Moanalua High School courts. The event is scheduled to run from 8:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.

Cost is $20 per player for the round-robin doubles tournament. Players do not need to bring a partner. Competition will be in 2.5, 3.0, 3.5 and 4.0/4.5 divisions. There are four games each round, with partners switching after every round.
