Following the fortunes of the best Hawai'i-born golfers can sometimes charitably be described as an unsettling roller-coaster ride.

This past weekend, however, was different; this time, we have a winner.

That would be Parker McLachlin, who picked up the game at the Waialae Country Club and Punahou, and took his lessons to victory by seven strokes in the Legends Reno-Tahoe Open on Sunday.

In doing so, McLachlin, 29, becomes part of a select group of local sports notables, joining three others — Dean Wilson, David Ishii and Ted Makalena — as Hawai'i-born winners on the Professional Golfers Association Tour.

Of course, he's not as young, or perhaps as well-connected, as some other famous Hawai'i golfers we could mention.

But if youth must be served, it can be noted that he's still younger than Wilson, Ishii and Makalena, who were in their 30s when they won their PGA titles, two of them in Hawai'i.

McLachlin is also a testimonial to perseverance and hard work. At a young age, he did odd jobs at Waialae in exchange for lessons. He methodically worked his way through no-name tours en route to a PGA Tour card.

His successful career has been built patiently and, in a refreshing change of pace, unsensationally.

So to Parker McLachlin, congratulations on an important victory and the best of (well-earned) luck on the rest of the PGA Tour.
