Pearl City captures Seniors West regional

Edwin Izumigawa pitched a four-hitter and Pearl City had 14 hits in an 11-1 win over Port Hueneme, Calif., in the final of the Little League Seniors (ages 15-16) Western Regional at Upland, Calif.

Pearl City (4-1) advances to the World Series, Aug. 10 to 16 at Bangor, Maine.

Jordan Oshiro batted 4 for 4 with three doubles, three runs, and three RBIs, and four players drove in two runs for Pearl City in the third meeting between the teams in as many days.

"This team here, they are playing together," said Pearl City coach Kyle Nakata. "All of them contribute. If one part doesn't hit, the other part hits. Today we changed the batting order and it worked."

HILO ROUTS LAS VEGAS TO REACH REGIONAL FINAL

Jayce Carvalho had three RBIs and Koa Matson hit a two-run homer as Hilo routed Las Vegas, 12-1, in the semifinals of the Little League Juniors (ages 13-14) Western Regional yesterday at Upland, Calif.

Kean Wong and Kian Kurokawa combined on a two-hitter for Hilo (5-0).

Hilo will face Southern California representative Rancho Santa Margarita (5-0) for the title today at 3:30 p.m. (Hawai'i time).

The winner will advance to the World Series, Aug. 10 to 16 at Taylor, Mich.

WAIPI'O GOES TO 3-0 IN MAJORS WEST REGIONAL

Pikai Winchester batted 2 for 3 with a homer and three RBIs, and Tanner Tokunaga went 3 for 4 with a double and two RBIs as Waipi'o routed Cedar City, Utah, 12-2, in the Little League Majors (ages 11-12) Western Regional yesterday at San Bernardino, Calif.

Khade Paris, Tokunaga, C-Boy Donahue and Trevor Ling combined on a three-hitter with 11 strikeouts for Waipi'o (3-0).

Waipio's next game is today against Henderson, Nev., at 4:30 p.m. (Hawai'i time).

Waipi'o had already earned a spot in the semifinals.

Mililani suffered its first loss at the P.O.N.Y. Pony (ages 13-14) West Zone Tournament yesterday, falling 6-1 to Victoria, Calif., at Fullerton, Calif.

Mililani (2-1) will play Victoria again today at 1 p.m. (Hawai'i time). The winner advances to the tournament final at 4 p.m.

Soobin Kang batted 2 for 4 for Mililani yesterday.

O'AHU ADVANCES TO SEMIS WITH 13-10 WIN

The O'ahu Kamikaze scored eight runs in the first inning and held on to beat Central California, 13-10, in the single-elimination round of the Cal Ripken (9-under) Pacific Southwest Regional yesterday at Panguitch, Utah.

In the first, the Kamikaze had five hits, two walks and one hit batsman.

Justin Shindo and Matt Dunaway drove in two runs for O'ahu (4-1).

O'ahu will play Bingham, Utah, in the semifinals at 6 a.m. Hawai'i time.

UH WOMEN PICKED TO WIN WAC CROWN

The University of Hawai'i soccer team was picked by league coaches yesterday to retain its Western Athletic Conference title.

The Rainbow Wahine also swept the preseason awards.

Hawai'i's Ambree Ako, the reigning WAC Offensive Player of the Year, was picked to repeat as winner. Teammate Tehane Higa shared the Co-Defensive Player of the Year honor along with Utah State's Lindsey Smart. Higa was last year's WAC Defensive Player of the Year.

Five Rainbow Wahine were named to the 11-member preseason all-conference team. Joining Ako and Higa were Taryn Fukuroku, Kori Lu and Nicole Mikula.

Hawai'i was 15-5-2 last year.
