  • David Ericson, professor in the Educational Foundations Department of the College of Education at the University of Hawai'i-Manoa, has been selected for a Fulbright Senior Specialists project in Denmark at Aarhus University.

    His services will include a seminar, a lecture series and the co-development of a master's program on education and educational policy in a multicultural society.

  • Joseph Bahola of Hilo, Hawai'i, is a third-place winner in the fifth-grade division of the Try Prayer, It Works Contest, a national competition sponsored by Family Rosary of Holy Cross Family Ministries. He attends St. Joseph Elementary in Hilo. Bahola submitted prose and artwork depicting St. Joseph.

  • Jacqueline Ho, a senior at Kamehameha Schools, was recently selected as one of Hawai'i's two top youth volunteers for 2008 at The Prudential Spirit of Community Awards program. She has been volunteering with Special Olympics since she was 10. Both her mother and father are part of the organization, her mother as vice president, her father as a weightlifting coach. She says that working with Special Olympics has made her the kind of person who stands up for those unable to stand up for themselves.

  • David Martorana, an 11th-grader at 'Iolani School, won third place in the Alliance for Science second annual National High School Essay Contest. Martorana gave his personal account of receding beaches and shrinking coral reefs, both linked to global warming. He noted the grave impacts on commercial agriculture and the fishing industry that could result from rapid climate change.

  • The Queen's Medical Center recently honored the Kokua Po'okela Award volunteers of the year: Tori Miyagi of Hawaii Baptist Academy, student volunteer recipient; and Suzanne Nakoa, adult Kokua Po'okela award recipient. Miyagi has contributed more than 420 hours and is described as thoughtful, enthusiastic and always willing to work. Nakoa is noted for her sense of humor and excellent customer service qualities.
