Hilo advances to Little League Juniors World Series

Advertiser Staff

Hilo won the Little League Juniors (ages 13-14) Western Regional yesterday by routing Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif., 12-2.

It was a fitting end to a tournament dominated by Hilo, which finished 6-0 and outscored its opponents 69-14 at Upland, Calif.

"They did what we planned to do," said Hilo coach Kaha Wong. "They worked hard and everything fell into place."

Hilo advances to the World Series, Aug. 10 to 16 at Taylor, Mich.

Taylor Goo batted 2 for 3 with five RBIs, and Ekolu Martens and Jayce Carvalho both blasted two-run homers in the first inning against Rancho Santa Magarita (5-1).

"Just coming out and hitting those two first-inning homers closed the door on California," Wong said. "They weren't used to being behind in a game."

Ridge Hoopii-Haslem and Martens each had three hits, and Koa Matson drove in three runs for Hilo.

Martens picked up the win with four solid innings and Hoopii-Haslem worked the fifth in a game shortened to five innings because of the mercy rule.

Four of Hilo's victories ended by 10-rule mercy rule.
