Quarterback Tyler Graunke said he needs to finish incomplete classwork to rejoin the University of Hawai'i football team.
Graunke said he has been given an opportunity to do so, and if everything works out, he is hopeful of joining the Warriors "by Monday, at the latest."
Graunke, who started two games last season, was the primary understudy to former UH quarterback Colt Brennan the past three years.
UH head coach Greg McMackin said he cannot comment on Graunke's situation because of federal privacy laws.
But Graunke said he is being withheld from training camp, which opened Monday, because of "academic reasons."
He said he did "not do as well as I would have liked" in a summer-session class. He said the class is part of his major, and he has not met all of the obligations of the class, but it is not too late to correct the deficiencies.
"I have one more opportunity to get the mark I need," Graunke said. The second summer session — and 2007-2008 academic year — ends next week.
While holding a roster spot for Graunke, the Warriors have decided not to put the competition on hold. Fourth-year junior Inoke Funaki and junior-college transfers Greg Alexander and Brent Rausch are competing for the starting quarterback's job. They are receiving the same amount of snaps. The other quarterbacks on the training-camp roster are Shane Austin, Jake Santos and Steele Jantz. Quarterbacks Kiran Kepo'o, Bryce Kalau'oka'a'ea and Bryant Moniz will join the team Aug. 25.
