At the national finals of the U.S. Junior Olympic Skills Competition, last month in Chicago, three Hawai'i tennis players from La'ie earned medals. Savanna Christensen won gold in girls 8-9 and Rachel Christensen, also from La'ie, won the 12-13 division. Zachary Frampton took bronze in boys 12-13.

Kamaile Aluli, from Hau'ula, earned the gold medal in girls 8-9 soccer and Savanna Christensen took silver in girls 8-9 basketball.

Also, Honolulu's Andrew Yip won the Arthur Ashe Essay Contest, in the boys 10 division. His prize is a trip to the U.S. Open in New York.

Yip also was picked by Ann Pankhurst, USTA player development administrator of coaching education, to attend a USTA National Player Development Camp at the USTA Training Center in Carson, Calif., this month. Hawai'i's Michael Chen and Austin Hamamoto also were chosen.
