E.K. Fernandez rides, offering thrills and chills, will dot the midway at the Honolulu Family Festival, under way this weekend at Magic Island, Ala Moana Beach Park.

Four reasons to check out the family-friendly Honolulu Family Festival, playing this weekend and next at Magic Island, Ala Moana Park:

  • Keiki fun is plentiful — and interactive. There are puppet parades and a Backyard Circus, plus a money-grabber event, where kids can draw fake money to exchange for free ride coupons.

  • Entertainment runs the gamut — from Johnny Helm to the Gregg Hammer Band. For culture vultures, there's Kenny Endo and his taiko drum ensemble, plus Brazilian musicians and martial artists.

  • Fill up on food and E.K. Fernandez rides and games. Fourteen vendors offer everything from Korean barbecue to huli huli chicken; from the Fernandez camp, there's a surprise ride this weekend and a different one next weekend.

  • Get your animal instincts up. A dozen piggies from Hendrick's Racing Pigs will race daily to nibble Oreos at the end of a track; at 1:30 and 2:30 p.m. Sunday, Honolulu Police Department's canine unit will make an appearance.

"And all of this is for a good cause — the money raised will go to the maintenance of Ala Moana Park, to keep it as a crown jewel of our city," said Frannie Kirk, festival chairwoman.
