White Sox place Contreras on DL

CHICAGO — The Chicago White Sox placed right-hander Jose Contreras on the 15-day disabled list today with a ruptured left Achilles' tendon, a season-ending injury.

The White Sox also recalled right-hander Lance Broadway from Triple-A Charlotte, optioned lefty Boone Logan and purchased infielder Chris Getz's contract from the minor league club.

Contreras, 7-6 with a 4.54 ERA, was activated before Saturday's game from a stint on the 15-day disabled list with tendinitis in his elbow, but his return was a short one. He left in the second inning after crumpling to the ground while attempting to cover first base.

"It's a terrible feeling," manager Ozzie Guillen said before Sunday's game against Boston. "Real bad. Jose's an unbelievable guy. His injury is not an easy one."

D.J.Carrasco, who came in and held the Red Sox to one run in 4 1-3 innings, will take Contreras' spot in the rotation for now. Boston went on to win 6-2 thanks to a four-run seventh against Logan, who did not record an out and drew Guillen's wrath.

"This a pennant race," Guillen said afterward. "I want men on the field."

And he doesn't want Logan, 2-2 with a 5.36 ERA in 48 appearances, at the moment.

Broadway went 10-7 with a 4.68 ERA in 23 appearances for Charlotte. He debuted for the White Sox last September and was 1-1 with a 0.87 ERA in four games.

Getz was batting .306 with 11 homers and 54 RBIs for Charlotte.
