LANDOVER, Md. — In his second NFL preseason appearance, former University of Hawai'i quarterback Colt Brennan completed 4 of 8 passes for 37 yards with no touchdowns and no interceptions in the third quarter of Washington's 17-14 victory over Buffalo.

Quarterbacks Todd Collins and Jason Campbell played the first two quarters.

"It felt great for us as a team to move the ball that way," Campbell said. "We continued to keep fighting and we persevered through all of those penalties, and I think that it shows the character and focus of this team."

Brennan led a short drive, following a Redskin fumble recovery, that resulted in what proved to be the game-winning field goal.

Brennan entered the game in the Redskins' first series of the third quarter with the game tied at 14. On Buffalo's first series, Dwayne Wright fumbled at the Bills 37 and the ball was recovered by Washington's Alfred Fincher.

Brennan's first pass went deep but was incomplete. After Marcus Mason ran for 3 yards to the Buffalo 34, Brennan completed a 6-yard pass to Billy McMullen to the Buffalo 28. Shaun Suisham then kicked a 46-yard field goal to give Washington (2-0) a 17-14 lead with 10:59 to go in the third.

Brennan's second drive ended at the Buffalo 43 and the Redskins were forced to punt. He had his longest completion of the night — 13 yards to McMullen.

In his final drive of the third quarter, Brennan was sacked for 9 yards and completed a 10-yard pass to Marcus Mason before Washington punted on fourth down at the Buffalo 47.

Brennan was replaced in the fourth quarter by Derek Devine, who went 1 of 3 for 10 yards.

Campbell went 7 for 10 for 71 yards, while Collins was 8 for 11 for 77 yards, including a 12-yard touchdown pass.

Bucs 17, Dolphins 6: Tampa Bay swarmed Miami's struggling quarterbacks, and Michael Bennett had 68 yards rushing and a touchdown to lead the visiting Buccaneers over the Dolphins last night in the preseason opener for both teams.

Chad Henne was the most effective Dolphins quarterback, throwing for 67 yards on 5-for-10 passing. He also led Miami's two scoring drives. Newly acquired Miami QB Chad Pennington did not play.

Dolphins receiver Davone Bess, a University of Hawai'i alum, had three catches for 17 yards and an 18-yard kickoff return. Teammate and fellow UH alum Reagan Mauia had one catch or 9 yards.

Jaguars 20, Falcons 17: The Jaguars rested Fred Taylor and lost three fumbles but still had enough offense to beat visiting Atlanta in the preseason opener for both teams.

Matt Ryan, this year's No. 3 overall draft pick, entered the game in the first period and led an 11-play, 74-yard touchdown drive on his second series. He completed 5 of 6 passes for 56 yards on the drive, including a 25-yard scoring pass to Roddy White.

Atlanta kicker Jason Elam, a UH alum, had a 36-yard field goal and went 2 for 2 on extra-point attempts.

Panthers 23, Colts 20, OT: Backup QB Jim Sorgi lost a fumble and threw an interception on the Colts' first two possessions when he was under constant pressure from Julius Peppers in host Carolina's victory.

DeAngelo Williams converted both miscues into touchdown runs, finishing with nine carries for 55 yards.

Peppers had a sack, a forced fumble and quarterback hurry to give the Panthers the ball inside the 20 on their first two possessions.

Chargers 31, Cowboys 17: Rookie Jacob Hester scored on runs of 1 and 2 yards to make a strong case for one of the Chargers' few open roster spots in a win over visiting Dallas.

Hester, the team's third-round draft pick out of LSU, gained 49 yards on 13 carries.

Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo led Dallas to the game's first touchdown on an 8-play, 54-yard drive. Romo completed all three passes for 33 yards.

Texans 19, Broncos 16: Texans backup receiver David Anderson caught six passes for 67 yards, including a 16-yard touchdown from backup Sage Rosenfels in a victory over visiting Denver.

Kris Brown kicked four field goals, including the 25-yard winner on the game's final play. Rosenfels completed 10 of 15 passes for 137 yards.

Titans 34, Rams 13: Keith Bulluck intercepted a tipped pass and returned it 13 yards for a touchdown, and rookie Chris Johnson zipped up the middle 66 yards for a TD as host Tennessee beat St. Louis in the exhibition opener for both teams.

Rams linebacker Pisa Tinoisamoa, a UH alum, had two tackles and one assist.
