Big Island Mayor Harry Kim is recuperating in Honolulu after suffering a heart attack on Sunday.

"After being stabilized at the Hilo Medical Center, he was taken to The Queen's Medical Center by air ambulance on Sunday," said Janet Snyder, Hawai'i County public relations specialist.

Doctors will perform additional tests on Kim to see if further treatment is necessary before he returns home. Kim was alert and eager to return to work, Snyder said.

Kim is 69 years old. He has been the mayor of Hawai'i County since 2000. Previously he served as the county civil defense administrator from 1976 to 2000.
