Hilo beats Virginia team in 13-14 age group World Series

Hilo defeated Atlee of Mechanicsville, Va., 8-6, today in pool play of the Junior League World Series (ages 13-14) at Taylor, Mich.

Hilo lost its opener 7-5 Sunday to a team from Alvin, Texas.

Hilo's next game is against Canton, Mass. at 2 p.m. Tuesday Hawaii time.

Hilo is one of three Hawaii teams playing in different age groups of the Little League World Series.

Pearl City is playing in the Senior League (15-16) World Series at Bangor, Maine.

Waipio will be playing in the Little League (11-12) World Series in Williamsport, Pa., starting Friday.

The Williamsport series is the oldest and most prestigious of the youth baseball World Series, with all games being televised by ESPN. That division was developing in 1939, held its first tournament in 1947 and received national TV coverage from as early as 1953.
