Guards stop HYCF escape attempt by 2 girls

Advertiser Staff

Adult corrections officers yesterday foiled an escape attempt by two wards from the Hawai'i Youth Correctional Facility's Observation and Assessment Cottage for girls in Kailua.

According to police, a 16-year-old ward allegedly struck a corrections officer on the head with a portable radio and attempted to scale a wall with another ward, age 17, at about 4:15 p.m. The escape attempt was stopped by other guards.

On July 14, two girls, ages 16 and 17, escaped from the same facility but were later captured. It is unknown if yesterday's incident involved the same wards.

The escape and second-degree assault case has been forwarded to Family Court for action.

O&A is a freestanding HYCF living unit on Kalani'anaole Highway.
