Hilo wins at Juniors World Series, 8-6
Jayce Carvalho batted 3 for 4, including a go-ahead two-run double in the fourth, as Hilo beat Mechanicsville, Va., 8-6, yesterday in the Little League Juniors (ages 13-14) World Series at Taylor, Mich.
In the fourth, Carvalho singled with the bases loaded to drive in two runs and another run scored on the play on an error to make it 7-4.
Ridge Hoopii-Haslem homered on the first pitch of the bottom of the first and Ekolu Martens belted a solo shot in the fifth for Hilo, the U.S. West champion.
Kian Wong worked the first four innings for the win against Mechanicsville (0-2), the U.S. South champion.
Hilo (1-1) will play U.S. East champion Canton, Mass., today at 2 p.m. Hawai'i time.
PEARL CITY FALLS TO FLORIDA IN SENIORS, 5-2
Boynton Beach, Fla., pounded out 14 hits and beat Pearl City, 5-2, in the Little League Seniors (ages 15-16) World Series yesterday at Bangor, Maine.
Michael Kelly pitched a three-hitter with five strikeouts for Boynton Beach, the U.S. South champion.
Kelly also batted 3 for 5, and Nick Worrall drove in two runs for Boynton Beach (1-0).
Jordan Oshiro and Kahana Neal scored runs in the third to cut Pearl City's deficit to 3-2.
Pearl City, the U.S. West champion, dropped to 1-1 and will play Surrey, British Columbia, the Canada champion, today at 2 p.m. Hawai'i time.
FIVE FROM HAWAI'I WIN GOLD AT MISSOURI
Five Hawai'i boxers won gold medals at the Ringside World Championships yesterday at Kansas City, Mo.
Waipahu Boxing Club's Keoni Adric Jr. (ages 9-10, 75 pounds), Villaver Boxing Club's Eric Auelua (9-10, 85) and Kawano Boxing Club's Justly LaLquihon (13-14, 95) were the male champions from Hawai'i.
Female champions from Hawai'i were Gina Ramos (101 pounds) and Alyssa Leande-Kane (13-14, 119).
Silver medalists from Hawai'i were Villaver B.C.'s Logan Yoon (9-10, 65) and Kawano B.C.'s Kochi Tanji (125 pounds).
LYNCH, FELDMANN GO 20 HOLES TO ADVANCE
John Lynch and Andrew Feldmann both went 20 holes to win their second-round matches yesterday in the Aloha Section PGA Turtle Bay Golf Match Play Championship at the Arnold Palmer Course.
Lynch beat Matt Pakkala and Feldmann defeated Kirk Nelson in the Championship Division.
Other second-round winners were Ron Castillo Jr., Kevin Hayashi, TJ Figueroa, Kevin Carll, David Gerken and John Hearn.
In the Senior Division, Ron Kiaaina Jr, Lance Taketa, Bill Hunt and Mike Iyoki won second-round matches.
