Makiki traffic stop leads to burglary arrest

An early-morning traffic stop today in Makiki led to the arrest of two male burglary suspects, who combined have a total of 53 prior convictions.

The two men, both 43 years old, were in a vehicle stopped for speeding at the intersection of Ke'eaumoku and South Beretania streets at 1:20 a.m. During the stop, police were dispatched to investigate a burglary complaint at a nearby retail store.

Police found the store's front window shattered. A revolving display case of sunglasses was stolen in the burglary.

Upon learning what was stolen in burglary, police at the scene of the traffic stop saw a display case matching the description of the stolen item in the vehicle. The display case was later identified by the retail store owner.

Both men were arrested for investigation of second-degree burglary.

In addition, police arrested the driver, who has 27 prior convictions, on two outstanding misdemeanor warrants of $500 and $900, and for driving without a license. The passenger was arrested on three warrants of $500, $80 and $50. The passenger was also found to be in possession of a glass pipe with possible drug residue and was booked for investigation of third-degree promotion of a dangerous drug and possession of drug paraphernalia.
