Driver convicted of negligent injury in fatal '06 collision

Advertiser Staff

A Pearl City man was convicted yesterday of misdemeanor third-degree negligent injury stemming from a fatal 2006 accident on Fort Weaver Road.

Lorenzo Gaspar, 32, was ordered to pay a $500 fine by Circuit Judge Reynaldo D. Graulty in a non-jury verdict. The judge also ordered a restitution study for $14,000 in funeral expenses requested by the family of 58-year-old Loreto E. Jose of 'Ewa Beach, the moped operator injured in an early morning collision on Aug. 19, 2006. Jose died eight days later.

The charge against Gaspar was modified from negligent homicide to negligent injury.

The collision occurred when Gaspar pulled over to the right of the roadway after blowing a tire. The court also considered the fact that Jose was not wearing a helmet in rendering its decision.
