Zagat, the publisher of globetrotting guides on where to eat, drink, stay and shop, is checking out Hawai'i, and a survey is now online. Be a critic and make your voice heard by voting for your favorite Island restaurants, night life, shopping, sites, hotels and attractions. It's not too late to participate. Log on to www.zagat.com/survey and vote before Aug. 31. Participants receive a free copy of the Zagat 2009 Hawai'i Guide.

KNOW YOUR VEGGIES

HOW TO SELECT THE FRESHEST

The September issue of Shop-Smart, from the publisher of Consumer Reports, has tips on finding the freshest produce:

  • Fruit should have a sweet aroma, and vegetables should smell fresh with no foul odors.

  • The freshest, ripest produce has a slight spring to it.

  • To make sure veggies such as green beans, asparagus, celery and zucchini will be crisp and fresh, bend them. Anything that's even slightly soft and pliable is past its prime.

The litmus test: Does it taste good? Ask for a sample.

    FINAL WORD

"On the one hand, you have the pain of humiliation. But on the other, you have the delicious guava nectar of laughter. You have to balance it out."
