49ers could be running out of patience with oft-injured Lelie

Advertiser Staff

San Francisco 49ers receiver Ashley Lelie, a former University of Hawaii standout, continues to be sidelined, but remains a part of the team — for now.

Signed as a free agent last season, Lelie hasn't seen the field because of a calf injury.

Head coach Mike Nolan was asked on 49ers.com what Lelie needs to show him before the season starts to find a spot on the team.

"I really don't have a good answer for you," he said. "Just got to get back on the field and practice."

Nolan then was asked if Lelie had enough on his resume to have a spot on the final roster.

"He has enough that we consider it if he doesn't play at all. But if he gets back out here, say, next week, then he's got a couple weeks to do something."

The 49ers added off-season free-agent signees Isaac Bruce and Bryant Johnson to a weak corps that featured Arnaz Battle.

But the injuries to Lelie, Johnson and 2007 third-round pick Jason Hill have allowed sixth-round pick Josh Morgan to become a camp standout. At about 220 pounds, Morgan is the heaviest receiver with big-play capability.
