SHAPE UP
The latest and greatest Calorie Bargains to try

By Charles Stuart Platkin

I'm always looking for new healthy-living products and services. Here are a few of my latest finds.

Calorie Bargain: Pace Salsa Verde (www.pacefoods.com/products.aspx)

The why: It's spicy, delicious and low-calorie. Pace has been around for more than 60 years, but I would never have guessed they'd come out with a salsa this good.

The health bonus: It's so low in calories.

What we liked best: All the ingredients can be pronounced by a 10-year-old.

What we liked least: Added sugar probably isn't needed at all.

What it replaces: Fattening dips and sauces.

The price: $3.49 per 16-ounce bottle.

Other offerings: Mexican Four Cheese Salsa Con Queso, Pico De Gallo, Triple Pepper Salsa, Tequila Lime Salsa.

Where to buy: Wal-Mart, major grocery chains nationwide.

Nutrition: Per 2-tablespoon serving: 15 calories, 0.5g fat, 2g carbs, 0g protein, 230mg sodium.

Ingredients: Yellow tomato puree, fresh jalapeno peppers, water, tomatillos, fresh onions, salt, cilantro, canola oil, distilled vinegar, lime juice concentrate, sugar, garlic, smoked paprika and natural flavoring.

Calorie Bargain: SurfShelf

The why: It's cool to be able to use your computer (watch online videos, check e-mails) while you're on the treadmill or elliptical trainer. This special shelf holds laptops up to 15 inches wide and weighing up to 15 pounds right on your treadmill.

The health bonus: You'll exercise longer and harder because you'll be entertained.

What we liked best: It's sturdy, inexpensive and fits most machines.

What we liked least: If you're engrossed, you could fall off the exercise machine. Plus, if you're too distracted, you might not exercise hard enough.

What it replaces: Newspapers, magazines and TV programs you don't want to watch.

The price: $59.95

Other offerings: SurfShelf has a new video and entertainment Web site (www.in-gym .com) designed specifically for the online exerciser.

Calorie Bargain: Food Should Taste Good's Multigrain Chips

The why: Yes, they're still chips, but they're on the "good" side of chips. They have no artificial ingredients or preservatives, and nothing that you can't pronounce. All chip varieties are gluten free, cholesterol free, have no trans fats and do not use genetically modified ingredients.

The health bonus: One ounce of chips has 3 grams of fiber. The sesame and flax seeds have lignans, antioxidants for heart health; flax seeds have omega-3 fatty acids, also linked to heart health; and sunflower seeds are a good source of linoleic acid — an essential fatty acid.

What we liked best: The healthy, nutty, off-the-charts flavor. Plus, the company is offering a $1-off coupon on its Web site.

What we liked least: They're still high in calories. Make sure to buy only the 1-ounce bags, or at the very least, keep in mind that 10 chips are an ounce.

What it replaces: Traditional potato and tortilla chips.

The price: 6-ounce bag is $2.99, 1-ounce bag is 99 cents.

Other offerings: Jalapeno, Olive, Chocolate, The Works, Sweet Potato and Buffalo.

Where to buy: Whole Foods and supermarkets; see www.foodshouldtastegood.com.

Nutrition: Per 1-ounce serving (about 10 chips): 140 calories, 6g fat, 0mg cholesterol, 80mg sodium, 18g carbs, 3g fiber, 3g protein.

Ingredients: Stone-ground corn, high oleic sunflower oil and/or safflower oil, brown rice flour, flax seeds, turbinado cane sugar, oat fiber, sesame seeds, sunflower seeds, quinoa, soy flour, sea salt.

Calorie Bargain: Miraclesuit

The why: Look 10 pounds lighter today. We checked out the Miraclesuit, and we were impressed. It's been around for 25 years, but they've been tweaking the fabric and now it's even better. The company says the secret is Miratex — "a fabric with three times as much Lycra as other swimsuits." The suits are also designed with details like shirring, draping, pleating and skirts to accentuate the positives and camouflage the rest.

The health bonus: Selfesteem booster. You feel good about your body, and that could help jump-start a healthier lifestyle.

What we liked best: That it actually works, and the designs are attractive.

What we liked least: It's a bit pricey.

What it replaces: Not going to the pool, beach or lake at all because you're uncomfortable.

The price: Swimsuits average $138, and matching coverups $78.

Where to buy: Major department stores, Cyberswim.com.

Calorie Bargain: www.Supercook.com

The why: If you have only a few ingredients in your home, www.Supercook.com will find recipes from the Web that use what's in your pantry. There are currently more than 250,000 recipes sorted by ingredients.

The health bonus: You can finally cook healthfully with ingredients right in your kitchen.

What we liked best: Using the "Recommended" section, you can instantly find out what flavors go well together.

What we liked least: The Supercook search engine doesn't test or rate recipes, so you have to check to make sure the site actually providing the recipe is legit.

What it replaces: Not cooking, or searching through cookbooks and recipe sites.

The price: Free

Calorie Bargain: Bodylastics Max Tension Fitness Tubes System

The why: We were skeptical at first, but these elastic fitness tubes really do work. The surgical-quality elastic resistance bands create tension and stress on your muscles as they move.

The health bonus: A toned, lean body with very little expense and plenty of portability.

What we liked best: There are 140 exercise video demonstrations on the Web site broken down by body part.

What we liked least: The DVD and manual should be free with the tubes but cost $4 extra.

What it replaces: Expensive home gym equipment, weights and/or a gym.

The price: $59.95

Other offerings: Terrell Owens Super Strong Man Fitness Tubes System, Basic Tension Fitness Tubes System.

Where to buy: www.bodylastics.com

Ingredients: Surgical-grade elastic tubing, solid aluminum clips, handles, ankle straps, door anchor, manual and DVD, travel bag and free online video instructions.
