HILO
Jaywalker struck by car listed in critical condition

A 54-year-old man struck by a car Tuesday night while jaywalking across Kamehameha Avenue near Kumu Street in Hilo was in critical condition yesterday at The Queen's Medical Center, according to Big Island police.

The collision was reported at 7:28 p.m. Police said the man was crossing Kamehameha Avenue in a westerly direction when he was struck by a southbound 2008 Chevrolet sedan driven by a 32-year-old Hilo woman, who was not injured.

The pedestrian was not in a crosswalk, police said.

The man was taken to Hilo Medical Center by Fire Rescue personnel and later transferred to Queen's. Speed or alcohol do not appear to be factors for the driver but police suspect the pedestrian was under the influence of alcohol.

Anyone who saw the collision can call Officer Matthew Kaaihue at 935-3311 or Officer Robert Pauole of the Traffic Enforcement Unit at 961-8119.
