NIU VALLEY
Board discusses possible remedies for intersection

State transportation officials outlined several possible fixes at the Kuli'ou'ou/Kalani Iki Neighborhood Board last week for what residents say is a dangerous intersection.

Residents studying the spot where Niuiki Circle intersects the makai side of Kalaniana'ole Highway across from the Niu Valley Shopping Center KFC restaurant counted as many as 22 cars running a red light there in one hour. There have been two major accidents in that intersection in the last five years.

Options could include adding, changing or removing signage and pavement markings; closing or shortening the left-turn lane; trimming hedges for better visibility for cars emerging from Niuiki Circle; or a combination of these, Transportation Director Brennon Morioka told about 50 residents at the board meeting.

A group of residents who came up with their own proposals for the intersection plan to meet with the department in upcoming weeks to find a solution.
