Hawaii tropical fruit up in production

Associated Press

The U.S. Department of Agriculture Hawaii Field Office reports island growers sold an estimated 2.3 million pounds of tropical specialty fruit in 2007.

This is 59 percent higher than in 2006.

The department says all major specialty fruit crops increased in output, except for mango and persimmon.

The 2007 sales revenue for the fruit is estimated at $4.5 million, about 71 percent higher than 2006 sales.

The department says the larger output has increased revenue.

Some of the tropical specialty fruits that have been included in the survey are lychee, mango, starfruit and breadfruit.

The department says about 1,470 acres were devoted to specialty tropical fruits in 2007, up about 100 acres from 2006.
