Twins draft pick Wong likely to play for Rainbows

University of Hawai'i recruit Kolten Wong likely will play for the Rainbows, according to his father, Kaha Wong.

Kolten Wong was selected in the 16th round by the Minnesota Twins in June's Major League Baseball's First-Year Player Draft.

Kolten Wong, 17, graduated from Kamehameha-Hawai'i in June.

"We're going to stay at UH. I think we're going to do that," said Kaha Wong from Taylor, Mich., where he's coaching a Hilo team in the Juniors (ages 13-14) World Series.

He said the Twins offered his son "10th-round money" late last night to sign.

"That's what they gave and we're happy they showed interest in us," Kaha Wong said.

The deadline to sign draft picks is midnight today.

Kolten Wong likely will play second base and center field for the Rainbows.

"It was a difficult decision, but my son is happy," Kaha Wong said of his son's decision to go to college. "That's the most important thing."

Kaha Wong said Kolten Wong impressed the Twins by recently hitting 11 of 15 batted balls out of a ball park during a tryout in Compton, Calif.
