BEIJING — Gulnara Galkina-Samitova of Russia has won the first women's 3,000-meter steeplechase gold medal in world-record time at the Olympic Games.

Galkina-Samitova won Sunday night in 8 minutes, 58.81 seconds, improving on her own mark of 9:01.59.

Eunice Jepkorir of Kenya took silver in 9:07.41 and Ekaterina Volkova of Russia, the 2007 world champion, was third in 9:07.64.
