A Big Island man critically injured in a motor vehicle/pedestrian accident Tuesday on Kamehameha Avenue south of Kumu Street in Hilo died Friday night at The Queen's Medical Center, according to Hawai'i County police.

Traffic investigators identified the victim as Steven H. Kepano, 54, of Hilo. He died at 6:20 p.m. The Honolulu Medical Examiner's office has an autopsy scheduled tomorrow to determine cause and manner of death.

Police said Kepano was struck by a 2008 Chevrolet sedan while jaywalking across Kamehameha Avenue at about 7:30 p.m. The 32-year-old woman driver was not injured. The pedestrian may have been under the influence of alcohol, police said.

The death was the Big Island's 15th fatality of the year as compared to 23 at the same time last year.
