Late-night fire damages car, home in Kailua, Kona

Quick action by Big Island firefighters kept a vehicle fire at a Kailua, Kona home last night from spreading to the rest of the house.
Firefighters were called to the home, at 74-5813 Nani Kailua Place at 11:39 p.m. and found the front end of a 1998 Chevrolet Suburban in flames in a driveway fronting the home.
The sole occupant of the home was awakened and removed from the house while firefighters extinguished the blaze.
The fire was reported under control at 11:50 p.m. and extinguished at midnight.
Damages were set at $10,000 — most of that stemming from the damaged vehicle. There was minor damage to the exterior of the house, fire officials reported.
